As I learned of some of the changes that happened around campus this summer, I couldn’t help but to think about Bill Engvall’s song, “Here’s Your Sign.”
For those of you who are not familiar Mr. Engvall, he’s a redneck comedian popularly known for his song that states, “I just hate stupid people. They should have to wear signs that just say I'm stupid...” That’s exactly what I was thinking about when I saw the signs posted on the newly renovated restroom doors.
Perhaps I can explain where I’m coming from a little better. According to campus business manager Henry Trenkelbach, in order to bring the main building to code, the lady’s room was relocated to where the men’s room used to be and visa versa. However, no other restrooms have been renovated, meaning that the lady’s room on the first floor is located opposite of where the lady’s room on the other floors are located -- hence, the reason for the large caution signs located on the restroom doors. Even though new signs have been hung, I expect someone in a hurry will ignore the sign and end up in the wrong place, deserving an “I’m STUPID” sign.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not calling the decision to switch restroom locations stupid. I honestly believe the renovations look great and am thankful for them! I’m looking forward to the time when the remainder of the facilities can be updated as well. In the meantime, however, the students will need to use caution when heading to the restroom. After all, if we see you walking around campus wearing an “I’m STUPID” sign, we’ll know you were the one who forgot to read the sign.
Aside from the restroom changes on the first floor, renovations were also done on the third floor of the main building. Updates such as new paint, carpet and ceiling were made. Motion censored lighting was installed, which will allow for greater energy savings. Also located on the third floor are new lockers available for student use. However, those lockers are reserved for students enrolled in the biology and chemistry labs.
Hopefully members of the faculty are enjoying their newly renovated loft offices with a newly installed HVAC system. These offices are now handicap accessible too, which is a change from last year. I’m certain that anyone who has ever had to cross campus in a wheel chair or on crutches will greatly appreciate this.
Room number 310 of the Main building was renovated. A second door was installed and the walls received a new coat of paint. New blinds were hung and new furniture was purchased for the classroom as well. With the amount of students that were observed in the classroom today, this looks to be a wise investment for the university.
East Liverpool students have much to look forward to through the remaining of the year. With the recent razing of a home, located along Walnut Street, students can look forward to additional parking space. The former Red Cross building is scheduled to be renovated to host a lab for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. New room signs should be installed through various areas as well. Finally, hopefully soon KSU’s presence in the area will be more noticeable due to the planned refurbishing of canopies in the school’s traditional blue and gold colors.
Remember, use your knowledge and don’t forget to read the signs located on the restroom doors. After all, you wouldn’t want to earn an “I’m STUPID” sign would you? (Anyone in need of an “I’m STUPID” sign, please see Denise Weaver in the Writing Lab M/W 12:00 – 3:00.)
