Local residents and students celebrate African-American history

by Sonia Gillingham
EAST LIVERPOOL – In observance of Black History Month, community residents, students from KSU-EL and members of the East Liverpool and Wellsville chapters of the NAACP gathered at Coffee Fusion & Tea Saturday evening for an open-mike event.

Participants presented quotations, excerpts from books, poems, and a rendition of “Freedom—a song originally sung by the slaves fleeing the South through the Underground Railroad. Students from East Liverpool and Wellsville elementary schools displayed artwork and posters.

The 45 people in attendance also learned about several African-American inventors who we can thank for things we use everyday: combs, brushes, pens, golf tees, and the refrigerator.

Pictured are NAACP President Makesha West and coffee shop owner Dave Marshall.
