Local Restaurant Hosts Artists’ Reception

by Heather Burnham
SALEM – Friday night at the Friends Roastery, three local artists showcased their work: ceramist Kathy Hill, painter Kristina Moore and Kent State East Liverpool art professor and painter Elizabeth "Betsy" Babb.
Babb was the featured artist of the evening. She stood proudly as she watched the visitors, which included her students, admiring her beautiful and colorful creations that hung upon the walls.

Her work is shown all over the country from New York to the Birchfield Museum in San Diego, California. Babb is inspired by cubists and German expressionists from the early 1920’s; she is a decorative artist with a Picasso-like flair.

She studied at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and also had the pleasure of studying under Peter Rockwell, son of Norman Rockwell, in Rome, Italy. A native of the Salem area, she has taught at KSU-EL for the past three semesters.

When asked how long she has wanted to be a painter she replied, “All my life!” “When I was around 5-yrs-old, my grandma said, ‘You’re going to marry a rich man someday.’ But I said, ’No grandma, I am going to be a painter!’ ”
