Kenyan women’s rights advocate to speak at KSU-EL Wednesday night

EAST LIVERPOOL - Alice Lasoi, a Maasai tribeswoman from Kenya, Africa, did not dream that she would become inspiration to other Maasai women. She has lived through difficulty in a society that privileges males.

Lasoi is the chair of a community-based organization in Kenya called the Educate Maasai Girls Program, which raises funds and supports schoolgirls there.

Audiences will be able to hear Lasoi’s story firsthand when she speaks in the Videoconferencing Room of the Mary Patterson Building on the Kent State East Liverpool campus at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7. She will also present for exhibit and sale her own handmade jewelry and beadwork.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of this caliber and stature as a part of our diversity programming for this academic year,” says KSU-EL Assistant Dean Rich Wiscott. The event is sponsored by the Diversity Committee, the Office of the Dean, and the Women’s Studies Program, and is open to the public. Community members are urged to attend.
