Remembering the Holocaust

by Bethany Gadd

EAST LIVERPOOL -- For those interested in learning more about the Holocaust, KSU will host a two-day event to showcase its devastating truths. On Wednesday Apr. 7, “Escape from Sobibor” will be shown in Room 116 of the Main Building at 4:00 pm. On Thursday April 8, “The Last Days” will be shown at 2 p.m. also in Room 116 of the Main Building. Discussion and refreshments will follow each film.

As coordinator of Remembrance Day, Deborah Woods has organized events to commemorate the Holocaust for over six years. It has been her experience that many students are surprisingly unaware of the Holocaust. Those who are tend to have the misconception that the Nazis targeted only Jews.

“Students don’t understand the World War II era, nor do they understand there were hundreds of camps besides Auschwitz,” said Woods.

Woods’ comprehensive knowledge on the Holocaust and the events surrounding it allow her to better inform and educate students and members of the community. Because she was born only one year after the liberation of the concentration camps, she was taught about this tragic event in school. Woods believes that growing up while the Holocaust was still fresh in the public's mind helped create her intense passion for this subject.

Woods’ interest in the Holocaust stems from the fact that she believes it was a “human” crime, and not merely a “German” crime, which she believes most people never even think to consider.

“Anyone or any group of people, driven to the limits of hate and intolerance, is capable of mass murder. It is a great mystery of our century how anyone could let this happen,” she said.
