Parking lot construction to begin Oct. 1

by Melody Gustafson
EAST LIVERPOOL – Among the litany of projects KSU has on the table for the coming academic year is a parking lot at the site of the former University Club, according to business manager Henry Trenkelbach.

Architect firm EG&G Inc. drew the schematics for the project and will also preside over the pre-bid meeting at the campus on September 5. At that time, various contractors will discuss the scope of the project and all of the regulations, such as the wage specifications for laborers or the depth of the trees and poles. After two weeks, the submitted bids are opened at Kent, and lowest bids are selected.

The plan allows for a three-foot space between the lot and the adjacent Masonic Lodge, but East Liverpool requires a 10 foot space. It also requires the city to allow KSU to vacate Pleasant Lane, the ally that spills out onto Broadway. Pending approval from East Liverpool City Council and the street commission, this variance will eliminate the exit onto Broadway.

If everything proceeds smoothly, work will begin October 1, which will cause a temporary shortage of parking for students due to the closing of the lot at Fourth and Broadway.
