Student Services Provides Daycare Referrals

By Heather Burnham
EAST LIVERPOOL - Midterms are coming and local schools are getting cancelled, but university classes carry on. Students who are parents can’t afford to miss classes but don’t know what to do with their children for the duration. Many also don’t know if they can afford the day care.

Kent has many tools that are available to help the students. These tools can alleviate some of the stresses for those unexpected days. For parents who have children, from infant to preschool, a daycare packet is available in academic advisor Sarah Motts’s office.

A representative from A Step Ahead Pre-school approached assistant dean Richard Wiscott with information on its daycare/ preschool program. It is a program that works through Job and Family Services located in Lisbon, Ohio. It calculates charges on a sliding scale, which means that people who meet certain financial criteria could be available for a discount or even free childcare while attending classes or working.

According to Motts, A Step Ahead is the only daycare/preschool that has approached the university, but she said “I would keep paperwork on whatever daycare supplied it to me.” Other daycare providers who would also like to include their information in the referral package can contact Motts at 330-385-3805.
