Small fire outside the Mary Pat

by Heather Burnham
EAST LIVERPOOL -- City firefighters responded to a small leaf fire outside the KSU Mary Patterson Building just before noon today.

According to campus Business Manager Henry Trenkelbach, the fire alarm was activated after someone discovered smoke coming from a vetilation well in the alley between the Mary Pat and Carnegie Public Library.

Trenkelbach said dried leaves in the ventilation well had been ignited by a discarded cigarette butt. Firefighters extinguished the fire within a few minutes. There was no damage or injuries reported.

Two students said they were in the building when the fire alarm sounded, and they had no idea what the "beeping noise" was.

Trenkelbach said that beginning in fall, the university will conduct fire drills within the first ten days of each semester and a tornado drill every spring.
