SALEM – The Student Government Organization is filling ranks with people who want to help others and train through the Citizen Corps, under the guidance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security.
The mission statement of the Citizen Corps mentions a desire to “harness the power of every individual through education, training and volunteer service” and encourages folks to “embrace the personal responsibility to be prepared.”
Members of the corps can help local emergency responders and provide disaster relief. The instruction includes medical and fire safety skills. Among others, The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), The Fire Corps and USA on Watch (UOW), are all affiliated with this organization, and help teach.
President Lucian Clewell invites anyone who wants to join the group of more than twenty future emergency helpers that will be holding a session at the Kent Salem campus. At the SGO meeting on August 10 at 4:30 in Room #135, everyone will meet and discuss the time for training. Clewell can also be reached through the SGO office in the vending lounge.
