Former East Liverpool Professor Passes Away

Dr. Joan D. (Anderson) Gailey, 66, of Rochester, passed away, Feb. 14, 2007, in the Sewickley Valley Hospital.

Dr. Gailey was a graduate of Geneva College (BS) Magna Cum Laude, Youngstown State University (MBA), Distinguished Business Student, and the University of Pittsburgh (Ph.D.). She was for many years a Professor of Business Technology at Kent State University, East Liverpool Campus.

Joan was the first woman to reach the rank of full professor in the School of Technology. Upon her retirement, she was named Professor Emeritus. While at Kent State University, Dr. Gailey was the first director of the Kent State East Liverpool Small Business Center and the first member of the East Liverpool Campus to serve as a facilitator for the Columbiana County Mini Loan Fund. Dr. Gailey also served as a board member and officer of the RSVP program in Columbiana County. Dr. Gailey was also active in many professional associations - the American Educational Research Association, where she served as program chair and newsletter editor for a focus group, the National Association of Industrial Technology, Midwest Modern Language Association, Association for Business Communication, and the Humanities and Technology Association. She served as the co-editor of the Humanities and Technology Journal and served on the executive board of the association for many years.

Dr. Gailey was also one of the co-founders of the Wall of Fame Annual Awards and Scholarship Fund at the East Liverpool Campus. During her tenure at Kent, Dr. Gailey was awarded the Kent State Teaching Development Award, Kent State Professional Development Award, the University Teaching Council Summer Award.

There will be no visitation. Friends are welcome to attend her memorial service on Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at 11 a.m. in the Westminster United Presbyterian Church, New Brighton, with her pastor, Dr. Gary Angleberger, officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. The family will immediately receive friends in the church social hall for a luncheon and fellowship after the memorial service.

The Office of The Dean of the East Liverpool Campus will be accepting donations to be used for a memorial scholarship. If you are interested, please make the check out to “Kent State University – Foundation”. This money will go to students enrolled at the East Liverpool Campus.

The HALL ROCHESTER FUNERAL HOME INC., 378 Jefferson St. at Ohio Avenue, was entrusted with the arrangements.
