Rough Road

by Kara Lockhart-Milan
The city of East Liverpool erected a new sign on Maine Boulevard this past week that reads “Rough Road.” That is the understatement of the year.

Maine Boulevard is in deplorable condition; it is almost impossible to drive down the road without hitting a pothole. The condition of this road is dangerous and a safety hazard. What is wrong with the city? Does it not care about the safety of the students and residents that have to travel that road every day? Is it going to take someone getting severely hurt for them to do something?

What if everyone with car problems caused by city streets turns in an insurance claim to the city? Would they pay attention then? I am ashamed of the city administrators for letting Maine Boulevard and all the others city streets get to this condition. Mayor Swoger needs to step up and start doing some explaining.

Maybe if the city didn’t take $30,000 of the street repair/paving budget and buy land they don’t need and can’t afford, we might have some decent streets to drive on.

One woman stopped me as I was taking pictures and said “Why bother the city isn’t going to do anything. Maybe we should let our children go on strike and refuse to send them to school until the city provides them with safe streets to travel on to school.”

NOTE: The Review reports today that city hall has heard the cries. Work on Maine Blvd. may begin as early as today.

I am at a loss as to why the city has let the streets get to these deplorable conditions.
