Scam Spam

EAST LIVERPOOL -- Phishing scam spam has been sent to KSU students in the guise of "team kent.edu." Computer lab technician Denise Fitzpatrick admonished recipients to delete and disregard.

The message threatens that it will delete accounts within two days and "suspend accounts within 24 hours for security reasons" if the recipient doesn't respond with user name and password information. Suspiciously, the falsely identified kent technicians need to know the "country or territory" the victime resides.

Kent's administrators have already blocked it, but in case a victim has already fallen for the scheme, go to the respective flashline account at mailto:flashlineflashline@kent.edu and redo the questions and passwords immediately.

Fitzpatrick said that the kent server filters spam of this variety daily, but this one slipped through due to its legitimate appearance. "We would never ask for user names and passwords" she said. Any time a correspondence asks for a password, it is a scam.

Fitzpatrick explained that this type of identity scam is called "phishing" because they are baiting the victim to give up valuable details.
